“We should strive to keep our hearts open to the sufferings and wretchedness of other people, and pray continually that God may grant us that spirit of compassion which is truly the spirit of God.”
- St. Vincent de Paul
Forming the whole person is essential to a Lasallian, Vincentian, and Catholic education. As such, SHC offers unique educational experiences that help prepare “service-oriented leaders with a commitment to live the Gospel”. Our school motto “Enter to learn, leave to serve” provides the inspiration for our efforts to offer meaningful immersion and service experiences that support the holistic growth of our students.

SHC offers three immersion experiences called El Otro Lado, Ven a Ver, and Lasallian Youth Assembly. Immersions allow students to live the message of our Founders. Rooted in the tenets of faith, simplicity, community and social justice, every immersion experience promotes human solidarity and cultural awareness while creating an appreciation for sustaining the value of faith and spiritual wellness. Information and applications for this year’s offerings will be sent to all students.
Sponsoring experiences of faith, service, and community, Lasallian Vincentian Youth (LVY) is a unique program for students to explore their faith, meet new friends, and develop a deep sense of community through active experiences of service. After-school tutoring, visiting older adults and homeless outreach are among the regular volunteer opportunities offered. Students can sign up for LVY at the Fall Activities Fair.
Each year our Catholic high school supports a variety of projects and people both locally and globally. We aim to create a calendar that is flexible enough to respond to crisis and need (e.g., the earthquakes, floods, wildfires), while allowing students and families the opportunity to give through prayer, specific goods and time.
Our service-learning program integrates curriculum-based community outreach and direct service at all grade levels. To learn more about service-learning at SHC, please click here.
Opportunities for service abound with both on campus and off campus projects. Campus Ministry provides a clearinghouse for opportunities through requests from outside organizations. Many clubs sponsor service opportunities that engage students in a variety of meaningful activities.
Founded in 1995 and coordinated by Christian Brothers Conference in Washington, DC, the Twinning program twins schools in the US districts in the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN) with the Lwanga District in Africa, which includes the countries of Kenya, Nigeria, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and South Africa. Sacred Heart Cathedral is twinned with St. Joseph School in Keren, Eritrea.
SHC is committed to raising funds to support our friends in Eritrea so they can receive the education they deserve and seek. We believe that true service includes a partnership rooted in community, solidarity, and global social awareness.
